🏜️ San Pedro de Atacama: el corazón ancestral del desierto

🏜️ San Pedro de Atacama: the ancestral heart of the desert

🕰️ History of the place

San Pedro de Atacama was home to the Lickan Antay or Atacameño people, a pre-Incan culture that inhabited these lands for more than 2,000 years.
This oasis, surrounded by mountain ranges and volcanoes, was a strategic point of exchange between peoples of the high plateau, the Argentine Northwest and the coastal desert.
With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the town was transformed, but it never lost its essence. Today, San Pedro preserves its indigenous identity in its adobe buildings, textiles, music, and customs , remaining a living symbol of Chilean Andean roots .

🌿 Flora and fauna

Despite its extreme climate, the Atacama Desert is a surprisingly diverse ecosystem.
Among its valleys and salt flats live culpeo foxes, vicuñas, Andean flamingos and rheas , while the ravines are home to centuries-old cacti, tamarugos and chañares.
During the highland winter, the desert timidly blooms, showing the resilience of life in one of the driest places on the planet.
